Protecting waterfowl and wetlands, one duck box at a time
Do you know the importance of Duck Boxes?
Wood duck nesting boxes play a vital role in supporting one of North America’s most striking waterfowl species, offering a safe haven in an increasingly fragmented landscape where natural tree cavities are scarce. These boxes, strategically placed in wetlands like the 35,000-acre Pearl River Wildlife Management Area, provide essential breeding sites that have significantly boosted wood duck populations since their widespread use began in the early 20th century—helping recover numbers from near extinction to over 4 million today, per Ducks Unlimited data. At Southern Quacker Wildlife Conservation (SQWC), our ongoing efforts to install and maintain boxes in the WMA, alongside boxes on private land, directly contribute to this success by enhancing habitat availability and supporting sustainable populations. Through our partnership with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and our community education campaign, we’re not only increasing nesting opportunities, fostering community engagement, and also ensuring a thriving future for wood ducks in Louisiana’s wetlands.
